Product Reviews & Advice
First,
it isn't often that I re-run one of my "Hockey/USA"
columns in another venue. I'm sure my publisher
appreciates that kind of exclusivity. Still, this was one
of those pieces -- plus the timeliness of it - - that
warrants wider distribution. Secondly,
it isn't a habit of mine to I hype a given product.
Still, counseling is a BIG part of what I do. And, in
going about my work, I DO run across some interesting or
useful products and services that I find worthy of
recognition... |
A Total Mastery System
Change is stimulating to most people, and I know it
energizes me. Such was the case, several years ago, when I
decided to change to re-title my "Hockey/USA" advice
column |
Talking About Equipment
After many years as a skills
analyst and coach, I've come to appreciate the great impact hockey gear has on the
learning process for beginners. |
Short Shifts!
About this time of year, some
hockey players are lucky to supplement their regular ice-time by taking to frozen lakes,
ponds or rivers. |
Advantages of Off-ice Training
If you know me, you know I'm seldom
at a loss for words about our game. And, you also know just how passionate I've become
about in-line training for ice hockey players. |
More Stress Means More Equipment Problems
Over the past two or three weeks,
I've spotted a number of equipment problems with my beginner-students. "Hmmm..."
I think to myself, "Why now? Why didn't I pick-up these problems months ago?"

A Yearly Plan
More
and more modern-day athletes are working at that sport the year-round. The benefits to
such extensive training are obvious. Still, there may be some severe drawbacks to this, if
common sense doesn't prevail... |
Training Gadgets and Gimmicks!
As I ready for our 25th year of summer
hockey schools, I'm sawing and pounding nails as often as I'm stuffing staff-manuals with
lesson plans. Yes, I'm driven to make my
spring clinics and summer schools as interesting and as challenging as anyone has ever
seen. So, I'm hard at work designing and creating even more... |
NEHI Instructional Hockey League
When it comes
to hockey training, I like to believe I'm capable of "thinking
outside of the box". Such was the case, several years ago,
when a rink owner came to me with a bit of a challenge. As I recall
him putting it, "I have some spring ice-time to fill, but I'd
really like to do something different with it. Any ideas,
Dennis?" Boy, did I ever have ideas... |
The Coach's Off-season
Like players, we parents and coaches need our own post-season, our own time to unwind after the typical long, grueling winter. For sure, this is a good time to haul out the golf clubs, take-in a few other sporting events or head for a favorite
fishing hole. |
Bridging the Gap
As most readers know, I visited the
old Soviet Union back in the summer of 1979. Wow, 20+ years ago! The
benefits of my studies are also well documented... |
Starting Out Right
I start many of my Learn-to-skate and Learn-to-play clinics over the next few weeks. So, I thought, nothing would be more appropriate than to kick-off the new season with advise for new hockey parents on...
|
In a Near Perfect World
I'm sure most older readers can
appreciate just how frightening the old-USSR was back in the summer
of 1979. The Iron Curtain was still drawn tightly, and the
Soviet-style Communists Party had just as tight a rein on its
citizenry... |
